In the story, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the unnamed narrator is trapped by the physical and social structures of her marriage, and the strict orders of her doctor, in the top room of an old mansion house. The isolation and the lack of mental and physical activity drive her to madness.
